MUJI x Airbnb

If you are not familiar with it, MUJI is a retailer from Japan that operates in 31 countries around the world with 970 stores including 479 in Japan. It is best known for its variety of household goods (including some clothing) all in a minimalistic style.

Many ask the derivative of the name … it is an abbreviation of a Japanese term that translates to “no-brand, quality goods.” So in Western terms, that might mean “high quality generic products.” I have visited the Manhattan store several times, and there’s also one at the Jet Blue terminal at JFK airport in New York. Sleek designs, small household goods, and lots of shop-ability. Cleanly merchandised. No frills. And yes, seems like good quality.

While not the first stunt of its type, MUJI recently partnered with Airbnb to create a MUJI-designed and inspired house in Japan, available for booking. Perhaps it is modeled after the MUJI hotel in Japan as well, billed as a “minimalist hotel.” Indeed, right on brand.

It’s a great concept, done before in other parts of the world, but gives us a glimpse into household life in Japan, something many of us may not be familiar with.

For fun, here’s a “MUJI-inspired” home to view:

What I love about MUJI is that the brand owns its look, and in some markets owns the look too. Not a bad thing for a brand, in fact owning something relevant is the brand gold standard. Well done!

Very clever for these two brands to come together … it’s a minimalist fit! Can’t say that about many collabs!
