We Need the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” Requel #FeelingFriday
When I heard that the 2025 film “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was being released today, it brought a big smile to my face, for a few reasons.
First of all, I’d never heard the term “requel” before … the mix of a sequel and a reboot where a legacy film mixes new and original characters with a plot that also mixes original and old story lines. Hmmm.
Second of all, this film and this genre is just SO Summertime. Brings back SO many memories of going to Summer movies for “slasher” films and other types of movies to escape the heat and get into some aircon (we didn’t have central air at home back in the day). Or we’d go to the drive-in (yes, the drive-in) and meet up with friends and barely watch the film at all! Ahhh. The good ‘ole days!
Plus Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., oh how I miss you so!
So seeing this quintessential Summer film get a new life is just so, I don’t know, kinda reassuring in these uncertain times. It’s familiar yet new at the same time, in an odd sort of way, for a horror film. Can’t quite explain it. In a way, we need it right now. Some normalcy and nostaglia that is rebooted, with some familiarity yet some newness, again even if it’s packaged in a horror film. It’s a bit of rest from it all.
I personally will take some rest from it all, whatever and where ever I can get it.
Now that I’m on a roll, I will also boot up my all time Summer favorite this weekend …
The ultimate … Summer lovin’ had me a blast …
Where ever you can find some restfulness this Summer, take it. Perhaps grab a Summer movie this weekend, any genre at home or at theater, THAT was never an option back in the day!
What’s your experience? JIM
P.S.: If you are not familiar with the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film from 1997, here’s that trailer:
