Selma Hayek on Her “Sports Illustrated” Swimsuit Cover #FeelingFriday

Source: Sports Illustrated

The annual Swimsuit Edition of Sports Illustrated just came out with a “surprising” cover model: Selma Hayek. She is a surprising choice because at 58 years old she never considered herself to be “the model type” and always thought of these cover models as “the new girl of the moment” which she never considered herself to be.

Well Selma, we’ve got news for you!

Selma is one of four cover models this year including Lauren Chan (founder of plus-size clothing brand Henning), Jordan Chiles (an Olympian), and Olivia Dunne (a gymnast).

Sports Illustrated’s choices are super smart to keep its brand relevant and newsworthy each year, in what might seemingly be a media environment that is evolving elsewhere.

What I love most though is Selma’s honesty about the shoot and her stage in life. She has real self-doubt about her ability to pull it all off yet at the same time has real confidence in wanting to keep staying in the game at her age. It’s a double-edge sword that IS real and that I think many of us can relate to, especially when we are starting out our careers and perhaps as we progress later in our careers too.

“Are we good enough, are we still good enough?” But of course we are … aren’t we?!?

“Do we have what it takes, do we still have what it takes?” But of course we do … don’t we?!?

“Can I do this?” Damn right!

I think Selma pushing through her own reality and showing up (so well) on that cover is inspiring for us all in so many ways. Thank you Selma.

What’s your experience? JIM

“Another calling that I have is to remind everyone that women are not disposable after a certain age in any department. We should battle that with all we’ve got.” - Selma Hayek
