Day Dancing? A Cultural Shift? Yes! #FeelingFriday

I’m hearing and feeling that 3:00pm is the new 9:00pm (or 11:00pm) and 8:00pm is the new 1:00am (or 2:00am). Confused?

Turns out that dance clubs are starting earlier and earlier these days and I am all for it.

Back in my day, we would never go out before 9:00pm and generally didn’t hit a club until closer to 11:00pm. And getting home, well that depends on what city you lived in at the time:

  • Boston? Clubs closed at 1:00am.

  • Philly? 2:00am with maybe a random after hours club for another hour if you knew where it was located and if you knew how to get in.

  • New York? 2:00am and then you switched to another club that had a special license to stay open until like 4:00am or 6:00am.

  • Los Angeles: Yes, all of the above.

  • Toronto: Same.

  • Miami: Latin time.

  • London, Paris, Berlin: Didn’t even get started until at least 1:00am, are you kidding me?!?

  • Sao Paulo: We are talking breakfast the next morning, kids.

  • Hong Kong: London time.

Seems as though this has shifted, dramatically. People are starting at 3:00pm in the afternoon and closing up shop and running to their couches by 8:00pm or 9:00pm. Day drinking has taken over where late nights used to be. Day drinking and day dancing, hot stuff in the full sunshine!

In fact, I just got invited to a big retro disco party on one of the piers in New York for Saturday night and it starts at 6:00pm! I had to take a double take! It’s on the roof so it’s going to be gorgeous but going to a club that early is certainly a cultural shift. But then again, home by a reasonable time means up in the morning at a reasonable time as well.

Loving it … feeling it. Dance the day away.

What’s your experience? JIM
