Brands on The Eclipse

Yesterday, many parts of the U.S. experienced a total solar eclipse. While eclipses happen with some frequency, they aren’t always visible from high-population areas unlike yesterday’s phenomenon.

So of course many brands got into the action with freebies, promos, and messaging. My favorite has to be from Oreo, with this simple visual.

The brand is renowned for its simple visuals that not only capture a moment, but capture the brand in that moment. Remember “Dunk in the Dark” during the Super Bowl blackout years ago?

Krispy Kreme donuts had a special eclipse donut available yesterday, right along with said Oreo brand.

Lots of places gave away the special viewing glasses, including Warby Parker. Now that makes complete sense.

And then you have SunChips who partnered with Astronaut Kellie Gerardi to create the Solar Eclipse Limited-Edition Pineapple Habanero and Black Bean Spicy Gouda SunChips. Too late to get it now as it was only available for the length of time of the eclipse itself: four minutes and 27 seconds.

The eclipse was a great proof point that marketing can be fun, can be in the moment, can connect to what’s going on in pop culture, and can give consumers a new reason to engage.

PS - This song was also “in the moment” again after so many years!
