"No More Tears (Enough is Enough)" #MusicMonday

The musical pairing of Barbra Steisand with Donna Summer was an epic move in 1979 … these two stars were brighter than anything else on the planet in that moment, so bringing them together to sing a duet about female empowerment was ground breaking. Huge. It soared to #1 almost instantly, actually beating out Donna’s “Dim All The Lights” to the top of the Billboard charts.

It was bold, it was loud, it was sing-able, and they were gorgeous together.

In her recent memoir, Barbra talked about how the historic pairing came to be. Love the backstory of the conceptual “Wet” album from Barbra and the subsequent adding of “it’s raining, it’s pouring” to the lyrics to meet the concept.

Such a lesson in humility and learning from each other no matter how accomplished one might be.

“You’re Barbra Streisand and you’re asking me how to sing!?”

The cover for the single was photographed by celebrity photographer Francesco Scavullo, who had also done Donna’s “Once Upon A Time” album cover. Here’s a fun look at that photo shoot:

Donna almost always sang this song in her vibrant concerts, often with her sister who was one of her background vocalists. Here she is on her television concert recording called “Live & More, Encore” with singer Tina Arena.

And here she is singing it with the group Westlife.

And here’s Barbra singing it live with Ariana Grande.

Enough?

What’s your experience? JIM

PS - coincidently, the song hit #1 on the Billboard Singles Chart on this very day in 1979. And it helped to make Donna’s “On The Radio Greatest Hits” her third double album in a row to hit #1 on the Billboard Album Chart which is a feat never done at that time or even since that time. Record breaker on many levels.
