World Sleep Day

Today is World Sleep Day, an event started by a group of healthcare providers to recognize the importance of healthy sleep patterns for overall wellbeing. It’s always the third Friday in March (the Friday before the Spring Vernal Equinox which is the start of Spring and longer days).

This year’s theme is “Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World.” Perhaps a purposeful mission given the state of the world and our general sleeplessness … we are not a happy world at the moment and many don’t have a sound mind as a result.

Dare I say that quality sleep is becoming more of a luxury rather than a necessity. I suppose that World Sleep Day aims to change that.

Many brands that have a say in the matter are celebrating World Sleep Day as well. I’ll give just one example, from a somewhat smaller and more localized brand. Equinox. As in the fitness centers (now in the hotel business too).

Equinox is featuring content for its members on World Sleep Day to “train” them on how to incorporate proper sleep into their overall fitness routine. The personal trainers even offer sleep coaching. The brand knows that sleep is a part of overall wellbeing and personal fitness, so it’s smart to include ways to improve sleep right alongside ways to improve cardiovascular health and build lean muscle mass. Smart. One small way to help others.

From a luxury brand, ironically I know, which is why I can’t help but focus on the sleepless world we live in at the moment. The people suffering in Ukraine as well as in other parts of the world simply can’t sleep at all. There’s no luxury in there for them. Not even in their own homes. How do we make that come to an end?

“Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World.” Let’s try for it. What can we do to get it?
