Unprecedented and New Normal

Introducing …

Today is May 5, 2020. 5.5.2020. A day I’ve been waiting for quite awhile. My new book “The Conscious Marketer” officially comes out. A book I’ve been working on for quite awhile.

Essentially, the book is about how brands need to be conscious of the world around them and how their consumers think, feel, and behave about the socio-political, popular culture, and attitudinal topics and trends swirling around.

I certainly had no idea that 5.5.2020 would come in the middle of a pandemic and global lockdown. I certainly had no idea how the world would shift over night. And I certainly had no idea how relevant the book would become in this moment.

But the truth is that if I were writing the book today, I would make a few changes. For example, I write about how there are two words that have become antiquated and should be stripped from our vocabulary: digital and integrated. All of our marketing should be digital and integrated. Of course@ They’re obvious terms now. If I were writing my book from scratch today I would write about two other words instead that have become antiquated and should be stripped from our vocabulary: unprecedented and new normal.

Unprecedented. “We are living in unprecedented times.” Of course we are. We know that. We are living with it every single moment of every single day of every single week. We know. Don’t remind us.

New normal. “We will just have to adjust to the new normal.” Really?!? And exactly what is that? Because guess what, when we do reach that “new normal,” it’s going to change again. And again.

There, I feel better!
