Skims from Kim

Whether you like her reality show or her omni-present pop culture presence or not, you have to respect Kim Kardashian for being an incredible business person. When she sets out to do something, she gets it done. Successfully. I see a lot of that in my daughter, which is partly why I take notice. But I’m just also sincerely impressed as a marketer.

Take Kim’s latest venture…Skims. Late last year she said she was going to launch a new line of shape wear to address what she saw as problems with current offerings. She did it online, and pretty much continually sold out order after order. The brand takes a “drop” method to its inventory management, and each drop went quickly.

Just this week, Kim brought her line to Nordstrom just days after fashion’s biggest night, The Oscars. Perfect timing.

There are two things that are cool about this line called Skims from Kim. First of all is the variety of options, shapes, and colors to work with various body types and skin colors. Brilliant. An inventory management challenge I am sure, but brilliant none the less.

And the second is Kim’s use of influencers to market the product. Kim is probably the OG of influencer marketing, and she certainly knows how to generate buzz and get people to notice other people getting noticed with her products. Brilliant once again.

What’s your experience? JIM
