“Because I Know Who I Am” from “Moonstruck” #FeelingFriday

The movie “Moonstruck” from 1987 starring Cher, Nicholas Cage, and Olympic Dukakis became an instant classic and gave an Academy Award to Cher. There were so many iconic moments in the film that live on today, such as the infamous “Snap Out of It.”

Iconic, although I’m not sure I’d actually condone the slapping part of it. But the sentiment, yes!

I was reminded the other day of another iconic and deeply meaningful moment in the film where Olympia Dukakis’ character faces a crossroads in her life. She ultimately choses what she considers the right decision, based on who she knows herself to be.

“Because I Know Who I Am.” So enlightening and deeply moving …

I was talking to a friend the other day who is making a very different but also values-based decision and she literally quoted the “Moonstruck” moment and said, “because I know who I am” in referencing her ultimate choice.

Brought me right back to that scene and to the choices I have made in my life, because I do indeed know who I am as well.

In times of great change, great divisiveness, and great disruption both personally and professionally, it’s important to know who you are. I’ve been there many times, we are there right now in many ways.

It’s important to know your personal and professional values and to stick to them. Use them to guide your own decisions and use them to shine a light through what might feel like an endless tunnel of questions that have no answers. The answers lie in knowing who you are … for yourself, your team, and your family and friends.

Call it personal values or personal connectivity … I call it personal branding and even wrote a book about it. What ever you call it, just know who you are and you’ll get through what ever life throws your way, in your own way. It’ll make those tough roads easier to navigate and those hard decisions easier to make. But don’t expect an easy way out, just a clearer way to make choices. Clarity.

Let’s also be there to support each other along the way in the choices we make, shall we?!?

What’s your experience. JIM
