GapSweats x Young Miko #MusicMonday

Is this a one off or an ownable territory for the brand ….

Is Gap getting into the music video business? Is the brand becoming the new MTV? Is it now “I want my Gap” instead of “I want my MTV?”

Is that Gap’s goal?

It certainly feels that way with Gap’s recent collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko for their GapSweats line. She reinvents her hit "Wassup" in a monochromatic celebration of comfort in shades of grey/black set to her unique sound. On the heels of Bad Bunny's legendary Super Bowl Halftime Show, it feels pretty perfectly timed. The collab is titled “Sweats Like This.”

But when you’ve been paying attention, you can see that this isn't Gap's first rodeo with music. Not even close.

Gap has been owning the musical collaboration space for over 30 years. Allow me to share some of my favorite highlights of the brand’s music video journey.

1989: The OG Jody Watley was Gap's first musical partner, 20 years after it opened its doors.

1998: The iconic "Swing" khakis commercial, my personal favorite and to my eye firmly cemented the brand’s musical foundation. I mean how much fun is this?!?

2003: Madonna and Missy Elliott reimagined "Into The Groove" and contemporized both the brand and themselves. Exactly what collaborations are often meant to do.

2004: Sarah Jessica Parker with Lenny Kravitz. An unexpected pairing, looking quite good in those jeans I might add.

Fast forward to now: Red hot from “White Lotus,” Parker Posey came forward in denim for the brand’s Spring 2025 collection.

Just a few months ago: Katseye for a recent denim collab.

The pattern is clear. Gap doesn't just collaborate with artists. Gap owns the intersection of casual fashion and music. They understand that style, sound, and pop culture go together and they want to be right there in motion.

That's owned territory after years of consistency with a brand knowing what it does better than anyone else and doubling down on it, decade after decade.

So what territory does your brand own? What's the one thing you do so well that it becomes synonymous with who you are?

What's your experience? JIM
