Celebrating Our 10th Wedding Anniversary - “Run” by Donna Summer #MusicMonday

“Love is painful, shameful

Love will always save you.”

This weekend my husband and I celebrated our 10th Wedding Anniversary and also our 27th year together as a couple on August 9th. We always make time, no matter what, to celebrate so we took a weekend getaway to Nova Scotia and spent some time in Halifax. We’d never been and we found it quite charming. Just enough for a special weekend to honor a special milestone.

If you know me then you know I mark my time in music and you also know I’m a huge Donna Summer fan. Well in a way she gave us an anniversary gift this year despite the fact that she passed away over ten years ago. One of her collaborators had a track that never made it onto her last album so he just recently finished it up and released it.

Lyrically, it’s as if Donna wrote it for me/us and lyrically it’s one of the most meaningful songs that Donna has ever written. At least to me. I’ve had it on repeat all weekend.

I have always been of the mindset that you have to make the most of what life offers you … “deal with the cards you are dealt with” is what I’ve long said/felt.

Roll with the punches.

Go with it, go for it.

Seems Donna feels the same. “Run with it.”

Here is Donna Summer with her collaborator Toby Gad with “Run” …

“You decide, what will be
Don't complain and look for sympathy
Down to the wire, open your eyes
You're the author in the story of your own life”

When you’ve been together for 27 years, life can’t always be easy. And the minute it isn’t easy, you can’t give up. As a gay couple with two kids, the life around us didn’t make it any easier either. But we decided what will be, we did not complain or look for sympathy. We created our own story and lived a pretty darn great life despite the challenges. We still do now that the kids are grown and living their own lives. And they seem pretty happy too, which is life’s greatest gift as a parent. With a grandson and another one on the way too!

When we could legally get married in all 50 states, well then we got married. And that was 10 years ago. Now that’s a cause for celebration! Hence our getaway weekend. We’ve also learned through the years that you have to celebrate life’s moments no matter what is going on.

Run with it!

Of course, this is Donna Summer so there’s a dance remix (or 3) to go with the original ballad version!

Thank you Donna. Life is both a constant challenge and a constant reward. We are lucky to have both and to have each other for both. I’ll repeat the lyric that I opened this post with …

“Love is painful, shameful

Love will always save you.”

Sending hugs to you all. Here’s to always “running with it.”

What’s your experience? JIM

“This is your life, this is your time, run with it.”
