Carrie Bradshaw “On Her Own” - Sheer Perfection #FeelingFriday

And just like that, we have the series end of “And Just Like That,” the sequel to the ground breaking television series (in that moment) “Sex and the City.”

Sarah Jessica Parker said that Carrie Bradshaw has dominated her professional career for over 27 years, well I think many of us can say that Carrie Bradshaw has dominated our television viewing in much the same way.

She’s a friend.

I’ve consumed every episode, every movie, and every moment including this last series. And I have enjoyed every minute of it. Including how the series and the characters and the storylines have evolved.

So while I understand why some if not many have not enjoyed the new series and some if not many have expressed great frustration at the ending, I actually for one loved it. And I for one would say that if you didn’t love it then perhaps you didn’t get it. No offense meant.

These characters started out young and freshly starting out in the city. Now they are not so young and not so freshly starting out in the city. They are actually quite established in the city and in their mid-to-late 50’s. Sort of like me as I’ve been watching the show too. Like I said, I feel like these are my friends.

So this season and this finale is not going to be like the initial seasons of the initial show because these characters aren’t in the same place in their lives anymore. It’s not about chasing the guy and talking about it at brunch anymore. Getting everyone together at brunch isn’t as easy as it once was. Chasing the guy isn’t as easy as it once was and maybe it’s not even the priority anymore.

Spending a holiday separate but yet together is reality. Facing failure is reality. Dealing with health issues is reality. Managing your adult kids is reality. And yes, sometimes (if not a lot) we have to deal with some shit. Reality. It’s uncomfortable, at best. Learning to put up with it, reality.

Going it alone, reality.

Which is why the closing line captured it so sweetly, so adeptly, so appropriately (in heals). I literally stood up and cheered. For Carrie. For her friends. For all us. For my friends. For me.

“The woman realized she is not alone, she is on her own.” And then of course the musical choice put a seal and a kiss on it.

Finale, done, close scene. Sheer perfection. Breakthrough television, in this moment, right now.
