Tecate Beer Gets a Google Pin with Its”Gulf of Mexico Bar” and a Cannes Lions

File this under just plain clever …

Please don’t view this with any sort of political lens, but with a clever marketing one because that is exactly what it is … just plain clever marketing.

Tecate Beer from Mexico wanted to put itself on the map, so to speak, so it placed a bar in the middle of the body of water who’s name has been in question as of late to riff of the news cycle. It named that bar “The Gulf of Mexico” forcing Google Maps to put on pin on it. Which then of course puts a pin in the middle of said body of water. Which then not only created a lot of buzz for the brand, but also won it a Cannes Lions last week for the marketing campaign.

Take a look at the winning awards submission to get the background as well as the details …

I just love the simplicity of the idea, the link to culture and news, and the art of the craft of the execution … leading to success for the brand. Bravo!

Coming out of Cannes Lions, I am always so inspired. And it’s work like this that creates such motivation to work towards even greater work for next year. WooHoo!
